Internships for midwives and nurses

A knowledge exchange in Guatemala: support the empowerment of Guatemalan midwives and learn from them and their extensive feminist experience. Your professional contributions strengthen our team and the midwives we continue to train, and your program fee and time directly support the continuation of our work. You'll be based in Ciudad Vieja, at the foot of the Agua Volcano, just a few kilometers from Antigua Guatemala. The part-time schedule leaves your evenings and weekends free to explore.

Requirements
  • Midwife or graduate nurse, or student in the final stage of their training

  • Intermediate Spanish (B1) or higher: You must be able to speak with patients, understand our team, and follow safety instructions without translation. We will verify this in a brief conversation during the interview.

  • Stay of 4 to 12 weeks, about 20 hours per week, between February and November

  • Over 18 years old

  • Up-to-date vaccinations (recommended, not mandatory)

  • Letter of support from your university or mentor, if you are a student

Internship Objectives

Experience community-based sexual and reproductive health care in rural Guatemala, working alongside midwives and vulnerable communities; learn about traditional midwifery practices; develop skills in gynecological and prenatal care, Pap smears, VIA/cryotherapy, family planning, mobile clinics, and rights-based health education, all in Spanish; and share your knowledge with our team and the midwives. If you're interested, you can also explore post-abortion care and the Guatemalan context through discussions on reproductive justice. Direct practice depends on your training: our midwives decide when you're ready, always with the patient's consent.

How to apply?

Write to us at coordinacionme@manosabiertasgt.org telling us about your background, your Spanish level, and the dates that interest you. You'll find all the program details in the brochure (in English).
